NPA Allied Member of the Year

Dutch livestock equipment supplier MS Schippers was crowned NPA Allied Industry Member of the Year, recognising its ‘pioneering’ work to improve pig industry biosecurity.

The award is the only one to be decided by an online poll of NPA members and Pig World readers. MS Schippers was nominated by the NPA as part of a shortlist of six NPA allied industry members.

The other shortlisted companies were:

  • Bishopton Veterinary Group
  • Huvepharma
  • Meadow Quality
  • Primary Diets
  • Zarkos-Smith Associates.

After topping the poll and receiving the trophy from NPA chairman Richard Lister, a delighted Gijs Kennis, pig division manager at MS Schippers, said: “To be recognised, as a Dutch company, for our business in the UK is a big deal for us. It was great to even be considered against such tough competition. MS Schippers is relatively young in the UK, so just to be nominated was huge for us.

“We consider ourselves as pioneers – it’s all about working collectively with farmers to combat diseases.”

MS Schippers has been supplying livestock farmers for 50 years, growing during that time to become a major international player, with 350 employees, 10,000 products and 12 offices around the world today.

While it offers an extensive assortment of products and solutions for pig farming, the company has increasingly made a name for itself by the development of its holistic approach to managing pigs.

Its HyCare method combines biosecurity and other steps that put health and animal welfare first without losing sight of productivity. The central theme is hygiene – animals living in a healthy environment suffer less disease and stress and have improved resistance, leading to a significant decrease in antibiotic use, the company says.

“A well performing pig farm puts much attention into the health and care of the pigs. By using the right products, investing in good nutrition and ensuring the best hygiene in the pig stable, a climate arises in which the animals feel well and in which it is pleasurable to work. Eventually this will lead to better company performance,” it adds.

MS Schippers says it has a great ‘Passion for Farming’, going to great lengths to serve livestock farmers. “The growth over the past years made us realise that the opportunities are unprecedented. We are more ambitious than ever and deploy every possible method to let our farmers farm even better,” it says.

Mr Lister described the company as a worthy winner. “They have shown how a supplier can go way beyond simply providing equipment by working with farmers and others around the world to set high biosecurity standards at a time when this has never been important. “This award is also an opportunity to thank all our allied members for the work they do in supporting pig producers.”
